Chapter Ten

This was a horrible idea, Vincent thought as he tried to hide from Bryan's line of sight. He was at a table in the bar section of Flickers— not the bar proper— with about five people from the office. He watched the wait-staff and realized most of them had been at the party last night. How they were still on their feet, he didn't know. It shouldn't be possible after what he'd seen them consume.

“Hey, welcome to Flickers,” came a familiar voice to Vincent's ears as chips and salsa were placed in front of him. Oh, no. “Vinny!” He looked to see Carrie beaming at him. “I'm glad you got home all right!” Vincent could feel his face turning bright red.

“Yeah,” was all he said. “You too.”

Jake looked shocked, his gaze flicking from Carrie to Vincent. “Ok, one, 'Vinny?' And two, you know each other? You been holding out on me, dude?”

“Yes and no,” he grumbled. “This is my friend, Carrie. She works here.”

She stood next to Vincent and leaned over the table, showing her cleavage to the others in a way that could legally be claimed as accidental, but certainly was not. “Vinny's one of my favorites. Didn't know he worked with you guys. He should have told me! I would have had him bring you along to the party we had last night.”

Vincent's face was burning as his coworkers stared at him more. Jake practically fell out of his bar stool. “This is who you're partying with?”

“So, can I get some drinks started for you?”

Everyone ordered their favorite beers. Carrie went around the table collecting orders but, suspiciously, did not ask for Vincent's.

“Carrie,” he started. He needed a drink desperately now.

She laughed. “Oh, come on, Vincent. Bryan's back there. He knows what you want,” she said with a wink before walking back to the bar.

“Dude, spill,” Jake said intently. “Where did you meet her, how can I party with her, and is she single? Seriously, I have loved this girl from afar for months.”

“You say that about every cute waitress,” Jaqueline said flatly. She seemed unimpressed by the whole thing as well. “Also, who's Bryan? I didn't know they let guys take home a paycheck from here.”

Vincent nodded in the bar's direction. Bryan was there, working on drinks. Vincent wasn't sure if he'd noticed him yet or not. “That's Bryan. We're...” he had become so used to their lie about dating over the past week that he'd almost said it, but luckily caught himself, “...friends. He's how I know everyone.” He had a sudden panic. What if Carrie let it slip? For all intents and purposes, she thought they were dating as well. This suddenly had the potential to turn into a disaster.

“Woah, he's cute!” Jacqueline said.

“It's Flickers,” one of their other coworkers said. “They don't let not hot people work here. It's like a rule.”

Carrie returned with the drinks and served them. Beer for everyone except Vincent, who had a mystery mixed drink. Vincent looked over to the bar where Bryan was waving at him.
